Jan. 9, 2013 – Being a chicken in winter can be hazardous to one’s health. Hungry hawks survey from above hoping for a chance to eat us; icy snow on which we walk celebrates at the thought of causing frozen feet. Mom let us free range today… under her supervision; on straw-filled paths. It felt so good to stretch our legs beyond the run walls and soak up the many sites of our yard – though most of my view was blocked by Wilma’s behind. Everything was going great until Addie pecked poor, sweet Peaches causing her to fly out of line and land in a snow bank. My heart dropped! “Get back on the path!” I cried. “Peaches is off the Path!”, “Peaches is off the Path!!!” alarms of the others squawked. Mom was on it. In one-fell swoop she dug Peaches out, brushed her off, and plopped her in line next to me. I held her wing all the way home. Tomorrow, Addie and I are going to have words.
