Apr. 11, 2013–Something was stinking up the chicken yard today. Ooh – it was a nauseating smell. We couldn’t figure out the source, though we knew the general direction. Since I always have my lab gear at the ready, I slipped on my goggles and pot holders and tracked the path of the stomach-turning stench. Along the way I came upon leaves of arugula and radicchio; grilled and discarded. I picked them up with my metal tongs to get a closer look. Interesting, I thought. I ventured a bit further, up and over a small rise –the air heavy with fire, the reek almost unbearable at this point. I held my wing over my nostrils and strained to see through the smoky pall. I called out to anyone who might be listening. Finally, a small feathery figure emerged from the putrid shroud. “PEACHES?” I gagged. “What are you doing?!” As the air cleared I saw that Peaches had a large pot of something, bubbling up and over its sides. “Oh, this?” she called back in her pleasant voice. “I’m making dinner!” I didn’t have the heart to say anything more to her. I hurried back to the chicken yard and simply said, “Get in the van, everyone, we’re going out to a buffet. I’ll drive.” Peaches made it back to the coops just before night. The meal had been a disaster and she left what remained to extinguish itself. I gave her a sandwich and my goggles. After all, there’s always tomorrow when you’re chasing a dream.
