Apr. 26, 2013– Mom was home today raking out the gardens and we were her helpers. We got a great deal accomplished until we heard her shriek, “HAWKS!!” Two of those nasty creatures were circling low and focused overhead. Mom scooped up Little Tim as she rushed to get the pullets into their run, while the rest of us older kids leapt into action. Bo let out a warning siren and ushered his flock into their coop. Wilma sashayed behind the shrub that borders the underside of the porch. Sawyer did a half run, half fly hurdle into the open door of the shed. I relied on my guerrilla training – (really; I watched a gorilla do this on TV). I smeared dirt all over my face, tucked and rolled down the lawn until I grabbed onto a low-lying pine tree branch and vaulted myself into the door of our run. Out of breath, but exhilarated, I slammed the coop door behind me. A few minutes later, Mom called the “ALL CLEAR”, but for me it was anything but business as usual. I put on my Citizen Patrol helmet and vest and did a complete walk-through of the chicken yard. Once I completed my head count and checked on my hidden cache of peanuts, I exhaled and took a nap.
