May 14, 2013– Many of the hens in our chicken yard have been talking about getting into better shape. This means laying off the mealworms and sticking to a diet of nuts and twigs and grassy salads for lunch. I’m not much into calorie counting, but I did suggest that it might be fun to exercise with a competitive game of tether ball. I found a large branch and with Sawyer’s help was able to stand it upright. Attach the old volleyball I found with a couple of bungee cords, and the excitement was palpable. In retrospect, a material with less elasticity might have made a better tether. Five of us gathered around the pole to play. I gave the volleyball a solid push-off to get the game going. Each time the ball came toward the face of a hen, she would slap the ball so that it would wind around the pole in the opposite direction. We had a grand time until the third round, when a wallop by Wilma sent the ball on a direct trajectory to Daisy’s head. The ball hit her noggin with a thud, and then snapped back into the fluffy parts of an unsuspecting Charlotte, who had bent over to tie the lacing on her sneaker. Back and forth the beatings repeated until Daisy lay dazed and confused and Charlotte toppled over herself. When the ball finally came to rest, all eyes turned to me! Well – this is a fine how-do-you-do! I gave the tether pole a yank and tossed it into the woods. Then, I hid behind the shed and ate a double-stuffed mealworm. And it was GOOD!!
