May 15, 2013– Mom opened the door to our run this afternoon to toss in some scratch. I thought that she was letting us out to range. So while the door was ajar, I sauntered by her and headed toward a dandelion green that had been taunting me all morning. From OUTSIDE of our fencing, I heard Mom tell the girls how sorry she was that she couldn’t let us out in the yard today. She had seen a couple of massive hawks overhead and wanted to keep us safe. HAWKS?!! Mom latched the hook through the eye screw and turned back toward the house. A quick peek into the run revealed two very content chickens devouring the treats laid out before them. Wilma and Sawyer were oblivious to the fact that I was not there. The shadow of a bird in flight painted a scary silhouette on the ground before me. I was too frightened to look up. Maybe it was a hawk, maybe it was a sparrow. I didn’t dare call attention to myself. With my back pressed against the fencing, I slowly sidestepped around the perimeter of our pen until I was back at the entrance to the run. Then, out of nowhere, Mom appeared over me and opened the door, ushering me into the safety of my home. That was some kind of crazy! A few minutes later, thunder boomed in anger as dark rain clouds carpeted the sky. I moved into the coop to settle my nerves. Sawyer gave me a couple of sunflower seeds to make me feel better. It did.
