May 18, 2013 – This morning, I turned on my computer first thing to check on the status of my fondue pot. I typed in the web address for CulinaryChickens.com, but after several seconds of staring at a churning circle in the middle of the screen, I was back where I started, deprived of any Internet access. Really?! Sawyer let me borrow her iPad, but she also had no connection. After a little digging, we realized that the entire chicken yard was down. No cable TV, no phone, no Internet service. I opened the panel box on the light post next to our run that houses all of the wires and connections, and gave everything a wiggle. I unplugged and plugged back in every power source. I crawled on my belly under our coop to check the main cable line. Finally, I grabbed my cell phone and called the cable company. Three hours and five service techs (from three different countries) later, I found myself having a lovely conversation with Millie – a goat from Nebraska who’s phone call to her mother somehow became entangled in my cable catastrophe. It seems that Millie is a techie who quickly identified my problem as a blown router. Peaches took a ride with me over to Staples to pick up a new one. In five minutes, I had us back online. That’s the good news. The bad news is that my fondue pot is on backorder.
