May 26, 2013– A few weeks ago, new human neighbors moved into the house next door. Oh my goodness, do they like to entertain! At first, I found their music and loud voices an annoyance; after all, this is a quiet neighborhood! I’m used to the sweet sound of our clucking and some country crowing by the boys. Today, the neighbors hosted another party. I found myself grinding my beak and balling my wings in aggravation as they lit their poolside tiki torches. “How can you stand this?” I asked Peaches when she stopped by. The ground shook under the rhythmic beat of a base guitar. “That pounding music is fraying my last nerve!” Peaches simply smiled. She grabbed my wing, gathered the rest of the flock and to the song that filtered through our chicken yard, taught us all the Macarena. “Way to rock it, Happy!” she hollered to me over Wilma’s head. I have to admit that I did have a ball and ended the day with a cheerful heart; that – and a promise from Tim to start crowing at 4:30 tomorrow morning.
