May 27, 2013– I’ve been thinking a lot about Clem today, our Blue Splash Marans rooster who gave his life protecting the pullets of Coop #3 from a red tail hawk last November. I remember how funny he was and how he loved to sit on Mom’s shoulder even after he was fully grown. I so enjoyed listening to him sing from the door of his coop. What a lovely voice he had. I am humbled by his bravery and the unselfish act of placing himself in harm’s way so that Waffles, Betty, Hattie, and Little Pot Pie could escape to safety that horrific day in the chicken yard. Mom told me that today is Memorial Day – when humans honor the men and women in the military who lost their lives defending us. I put a flag next to Clem’s resting place this afternoon. I told him that the pullets are a handful, but they’ll make great hens. I told him that I miss him terribly. And then, I sang his favorite song, “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” at the top of my lungs. I may be a lowly chicken – but today I salute every heart that finds bravery in loving another more than itself.
