June 2, 2013– Sawyer, Peaches and I were talking the other day about the harmful effects of the sun’s rays. Actually, Sawyer was doing all the talking while Peaches and I nodded politely. It seems she read an article about overexposure in the Prevention Magazine that was in the recycling bin and now she is adamant that we apply sunscreen to our feathers every time we head out into the chicken yard. This morning, I yawned, stretched, and scratched my fluffy butt feathers in the most ladylike way, before heading down the ramp into our run. I was on the second rung when a sudden spurt of goop came out of nowhere and hit me right in the eye! “MY EYES!” I cried, sidestepping into thin air and landing with a thud onto rock-hard dirt. I regained my sight enough to see a blurry figure looming over me. “Lather now and live longer!” Sawyer chirped as another squirt of lotion shot out of the tube she was holding like a dart to my beak. I was about to lose my cool with her, when I realized that the sunscreen tasted like coconut, which reminded me of piña coladas. So, I let my best friend protect me from the yellow ball in the sky, while I mixed us up a couple of icy cold adult beverages. It’s good to be loved.
