June 3, 2013– The wooden airplane kit that I ordered online arrived last night by carrier truck. It took me all morning, but I finally finished the assembly just before noon. She is splendid! This bird has room for the pilot and one passenger. I planned our inaugural flight for 3:00 this afternoon and asked Wilma to come with me. I figured if anything happened while we were in the sky, she is the most level-headed one of the girls to have with me. That – and eyes like a hawk… a crucial skill when navigating. The entire chicken yard lined up to see us off. The pullets attached their iPod to the backyard speaker system and played Frank Sinatra’s Fly Me to the Moon, as Wilma and I crossed the lawn in our flight suits and leather helmets. I felt like a million bucks as we climbed aboard my first aeronautical achievement and waved goodbye to our dear friends. “All right, Einstein,”, instructed the gravelly voice from behind me. “Let’s get this songbird off the ground.” It was in that moment that I realized a fundamental oversight on my part. In my exuberance I had failed to install the engine. After a righteous and well deserved peck to the back of my head, Wilma and I disembarked the plane and walked past the same faces which moments before had cheered us on so enthusiastically. Talk about humiliating! Leave it to the Pullets, though. They quickly switched up the music to, That’s Life and rooted for us anyway.
