June 19, 2013– I was in the nest box early this morning getting the egg laying business out of the way when I heard what sounded like a cappuccino machine outside of our coop. “Pa-shhh…, Pa-shhhh…,” the pleasant beat repeated. It was so odd. I didn’t smell espresso or steamed-milk foam through the window screen. Curiosity finally got the better of me and I craned my neck up and over the nest partition just enough so I could see out the bottom of the window. “Well, hello there!” a voice called to Sawyer who was standing at the fence with some of the others. The egg can wait. I abandoned the nest and flew out of the coop in time to see four people smiling and having a jolly good time from the basket of a hot air balloon. They were directly over our chicken yard! “Lovely day isn’t it?” a woman in the basket with yellow hair declared through tiny cupped hands. The entire flock now stood in a line with necks crooked to the sky. I read about these balloons in my science magazine, even spotting one here and there in the distance, but I never before saw one up close. It was magnificent! My senses couldn’t take in the colors and sounds fast enough. Before I had a chance to fully process what was happening, another “Pa-shhh” carried the balloon up and over the tree line, and then, out of sight. “Toodaloo,” I heard the woman shout over the sound of the liquid propane igniting into a blast of flame. It was so exciting that I didn’t even notice when the egg dropped out of my lady parts and landed on Wilma’s foot. What a day!
