July 4, 2013– I am almost ready for bed, grateful to be writing my journal in front of a window fan. Even as the moon rises, the heat remains. Still, it was a wonderful Independence Day. We started out with a flag and wagon parade around the chicken yard. Then, we gorged on grilled grubs, corn on the cob and cool, refreshing watermelon slices. I won the seed spitting contest, eeking out a narrow win over Tim. Peaches spit her watermelon seeds into the back of my head, demonstrating that she has neither the skill nor the sense of direction necessary to take on such a challenge. We had a good laugh over that. Poor Sawyer got a bit of a belly bruise on the slip-and-slide that we set up in the side yard. She took off head first down the watery stretch of plastic, gaining so much speed that she sailed into the air and landed in the pink azaleas. Ouch! She was beaming as we pulled her from the branches though, excited to go at it a second time. Even the older hens gave it a whirl! Charlotte and Emaline held wings and slid together downhill on the hose-drenched slope filling the air with boisterous giggles. When they got up, their red, white, and blue pantaloons were soaking wet and wedged over their heads. Charlotte was laughing so hard that she laid an egg, right there on the slip-and-slide! I laughed so hard, I had tears in my eyes! Today was a holiday that I will remember for years to come.
