July 12, 2013– This morning at our monthly Meeting of the Hens, we decided that a hootenanny would be a wonderful Friday night activity. It offers a great opportunity to sing and dance, enjoy each other’s company and partake in some weekend poultry punch, (our version of adult beverages for humans). Before the serious yodeling, knee slapping, and punch consumption began, we first wanted to take a few minutes and bring out from their nursery in the garage, the four littlest chickens to hear a sweet lullaby by Sawyer, our best singer. Since I run the pullet camp and in a few short weeks will be teaching these juniors everything there is to know about being a hen, I volunteered to be their chaperone. When I told the chicks that they were leaving the garage for a few minutes, I stressed how important it was to stay together. “When we leave the brooder,” I instructed, “we will hold wings and no matter what, no one is to let go until I say so. Does everyone understand?” Three innocent faces sweetly nodded in agreement, barely able to contain their excitement. The fourth chick, the tallest of the group, held her composure, maturely listening to my instructions then calmly, and in a raspy whisper replied, “Gotcha”. Three weeks old, and she already sounds like Bea Arthur. This one is going to give Wilma a run for her money.
