July 27, 2013 – Mom was off for the day, so I thought it would be great if we surprised her and did all the weekend chicken chores before she got back. I asked the flock what they thought about having a big cleanup to surprise Mom and everyone nodded. “Yessiree! Let’s get it done!” Bo boomed. I made the first move and took the job of cleaning out all the water and food containers and refilling them with a fresh supply. “I’ll rake!” Peaches chimed enthusiastically. “Emaline and I will wash the windows”, offered Violet as Emaline’s head bobbed in approval behind her. “Betty, Hattie and I will scoop out the old shavings”, Waffles said merrily, “And we’ll toss the fresh shavings in!” Sawyer and Wilma blurted together. When there were no jobs left to assign, we chickens got busy. Not wanting to be left out, the baby chicks pitched in by setting up a lemonade stand and passing out cool drinks. This was much appreciated on such a beautiful and warm day. The only slacker was Tim! He was supposed to be on egg collection duty with Charlotte and Addie, but I found him staring at himself in a piece of broken glass that he found under the shed. “TIM!” I said sharply, interrupting his narcissistic trance. “The entire flock except for you is in the chicken yard busting their butts and here you are doing diddlysquat!” “I’m doing diddly,” he replied, and then lifted a basket containing two freshly laid eggs to prove his point. “It’s the squat I’m having trouble with.” I had no idea what the boy was talking about, so I left him to his self-adoration and rejoined the others. When Mom got home, she was so surprised that she cried cheerful tears and pulled us into a big group hug. I’m thinking there may be watermelon and mealworms in our future!
