August 7, 2013 – Today was interesting. I was mulling around our coop, lazily searching for treats Mom may have spilled, when Betty came running toward me like she was fueled on moonshine. “What in tarnation is going on with you?” I asked in a twang befitting someone who had just used the word moonshine in a sentence. “It’s terribly important news,” Betty expressed between gulps of air. “There’s a horrific illness spreading across Mrs. Turner’s farm and it appears to be highly contagious! I need to warn the flock!” I slowed the young hen down and inquired about the details. From what I could piece together, Betty and her sisters broke their boundary limits and took a walk down by the farm where they overheard Gertrude, one of Mrs. Turner’s goats tell Rosemary, her dairy cow, that she had a case of the goose pimples. Rosemary acknowledged that she also had the condition. “See what I mean, Happy?” Betty squeaked. “The goose must be sick and it’s passed the illness on to the other animals!” I asked Betty if she heard what Gertrude and Rosemary were talking about just before the topic of goose disease surfaced. “Yes,” she nodded, “they were swooning over the new bull, Francesco.” Ahhh, we had reached the bottom of it all. “You’re safe,” I reassured her. “Hey?” I added. “Why don’t you pop into Coop #1 and tell them your story?” I knew full well that if Charlotte and Addie heard the “Case of the Farmyard Goose Pimples”, they would feel compelled to sit Betty down and give her “The Talk”. Better them than me. I’m still a little fuzzy on the details.
