August 14, 2013 – I just settled in after an exhausting, yet exhilarating day. I had the thought that I should challenge myself more. So today, I began a stamp collection! Sawyer walked into town with me so I could purchase all of the right paraphernalia; a binder, white cloth gloves, a magnifying glass and tweezers. Sure, I have some of these supplies already in my science kit, but these will be kept separate and only for stamps. There were so many things to look at in the Portland Stamp Company. Sawyer and I scrutinized it all with our beaks pressed up to the display cases in between the long legs of human shoppers. And then, I saw it. A 1948 Centennial of the American Poultry Industry stamp featuring a lovely hen and the original price of 3 cents. What a thrill! I jumped up on Sawyer’s shoulders, tossed my change onto the counter and watched the sales woman ring it up. Holy smokes! I am an official philatelist! (It means someone who collects stamps. I just learned that today.) Sawyer didn’t leave empty handed either. She had her eye on a shiny coin depicting a worm! She’s going to start collecting money! What a great day. After Mom put us to bed for the night, I turned on my flashlight to write my journal entry and stare at my new stamp. She’s a beauty!
