August 15, 2013 – The scooter that I won last week in the radio contest, arrived this morning! Whooo hooo! It’s a beautiful yellow Vespa with room for two! The entire flock stood around the packing crate as the delivery man used his crow bar to pry the top and sides off of the box. This bike came all the way from the Vespa factory in Italy! When the delivery man hopped back into his truck, we waved goodbye in Italian; “Arrivederci!” Since he himself is from around here, he just stuck his arm out the window and waved goodbye without saying anything at all. Much to my good fortune, Mom was out running errands when the scooter arrived. Lucky me, since my plan to tell her about the contest never actually materialized. I asked the others what I should do about the situation. While we are all proponents of telling the truth, we agreed it would be best to keep news of the Vespa acquisition quiet for the time being. We don’t want Mom to worry unnecessarily over her chickens leaving the yard every day for motorized adventures… in real traffic. I don’t think she could handle that! Since I offered to share the Vespa with everyone, concealing it became a team mission. We were quickly able to build a camouflaged stall in the back of the shed. Mom’s not in there that often, so I don’t think she’ll find it. Now, I have to go online and order everyone a helmet. Riding is exhilarating, but safety is paramount. I have my colander, but the other chickens will need head protection and watermelons won’t be in season forever. I can’t wait for our first adventure!
