August 23, 2013 – We saw a hawk circling today! After not seeing one all summer, it came as a brutal reminder that we chickens must be ever vigilant. Our roosters do a great job keeping us safe, but one can never be too careful. This is why this afternoon we took a vote to reinstitute the Chicken Citizens’ Patrol. As Head Safety Chicken, it is my responsibility to train the rest of the flock in identifying birds of prey and conduct emergency drills so each of us can react instinctively should an air attack present itself. We met in a clearing inside the shed. Peaches helped me put together a slide presentation that showed gruesome, realistic images of a hawk zeroing in on an innocent chicken. Bo reminded us what his danger crow sounds like. Tim cranked up the small warning siren that he will man once Bo signals the alert. Waffles, Sawyer, and Violet each signed up to be the window slammers in their respective coops. Wilma, with the aid of a pointer, diagramed the safety areas around the yard should the coop be too far away when a hawk is spotted. And finally, we made the unanimous decision to purchase a dozen poultry protection slingshots that will be mounted in key locations around the yard with an ample supply of crabapple ammunition. I think we’re in fairly good shape for hawk season. Oh, and until next summer when the hawks once again choose mice over us, we are suggesting that every chicken when free ranging wear the colander helmet that I presented to each of them today. We are chickens and we will not be bullied (or eaten) by bigger birds!
