August 24, 2013 – What a day! We couldn’t find Waffles, Betty and Hattie for about three hours this afternoon. They were supposed to be under the pines snacking on mosquitos, but when Sawyer went to get them for a slice of watermelon, they were nowhere in sight! We were in a panic picturing the worst case scenario. We formed a search party and were about to leave the chicken yard, when the three of them came sauntering in as if nothing was wrong. “Where were you?” Sawyer scolded. “We’ve been worried sick!” Each one denied any wrong doing but their blue faces gave them away. “You’ve been eating blueberries, haven’t you?” I prodded. Waffles finally broke, confessing that the three young hens had started out eating mosquitos at the edge of the woods, but then remembered seeing blueberry bushes behind the shed. They didn’t stop eating until the bushes were completely bare of fruit. We were going to lecture them about safety, especially in light of the recent hawk sighting, but we could tell by the way they were holding their stomachs that they were in for an uncomfortable night. Tomorrow though, I’ll be spending a bit of quality time with the berry bandits reviewing the Chickens Citizens’ Patrol Manual of Mandatory Security Procedures. I think I aged 10 years today! Time for a well-deserved Piña Colada.
