September 4, 2013 – What a delightful day! My wings were quite limp from having bowled yesterday, making it difficult to for me to complete my morning ablutions, but aside from that, I enjoyed myself enormously. I spent the afternoon simply doing things that chickens do. I was about to report that nothing unusual happened today, until I remembered that just a few minutes ago, Waffles had an “incident”. I overheard Mom talking to her in the run as she was getting ready to close up coop #3 for the night. Betty and Hattie went right in, but Waffles stayed under the steps even as it got dark. This is not unusual for Waffles. She LOVES being outside and is always the last one in. But this time, Mom sounded concerned. Something about Waffles didn’t seem right. She took a closer look at her and except for an unsettled look in Waffle’s eyes, saw nothing to be alarmed about. She eventually enticed her into the coop with a handful of cracked corn, which Waffles scoffed down before hopping up to take her position on the roost. Waffles looked much better suddenly. “Hmmmph?” Mom shrugged as she closed the people door to the coop. She walked behind the henhouse and was about to close the chicken door, when there on the second step she discovered a medium, light brown egg, cracked in half from the impact of its abrupt and rigid landing. What a beauty! There it was; the reason for Waffle’s peculiar gaze. In her attempt to cram as much scratching and pecking into the day as she could, Waffles had forgotten to lay her egg. She was embarrassed. When time could wait no longer, (and a fistful of corn beseeched), she finally gave in to the remains of the day and nonchalantly dropped her egg on the way into the coop. I should be surprised that she was able to hold on to it as long as she did, but then again, Waffles is a young hen with muscles that can pop the top off of a bottle of ginger beer. It’s her opening act on Chicken Talent Night.
