September 7, 2013 – Guess what I had for the first time ever? Cantaloupe! Mom gave it to us today as a special treat. She walked up to our coop while I was inside surfing the Internet for places to ride my Vespa. Good thing she didn’t see the screen! She poked her head inside and said, “Knock knock!” So I replied, “Who’s there?” Mom said, “Cantaloupe!” So I asked, “Cantaloupe who?” Then she said, “Cantaloupe with you tonight!” and started laughing hysterically. I turned to Sawyer who was by the window stirring batter for cornbread, and whispered, “I don’t get it”. Had Mom gone off the deep end? I didn’t have a chance to ask before her head was gone from our doorway and her legs, surrounded by the rest of the flock, took center stage in our run. Sawyer and I stepped outside to see what the commotion was about. That’s when I heard Mom repeat her weird joke to the others. They slapped themselves silly; chuckling right alongside of her. “Here you go, girls!” she said turning to me and Sawyer on the steps. “Have a piece of melon. This is called, cantaloupe. Hope you like it!” We did! It was sweet and juicy and by far the most delectable fruit I have ever eaten. After she left the chickenyard, I asked the other hens if anyone understood Mom’s joke. “Nope,” said Wilma. “Not a clue,” said Betty. “I think she has a bit of the fever,” suggested Waffles, even though she had laughed the hardest. Well, if she does, it seems to be a cheerful condition. I made a mental note to peek into her bedroom window later to see if we needed to call the veterinarian. In the meantime, I snagged a wedge of cantaloupe and went back to my laptop.
