September 13, 2013 – One of our family dogs, a brilliant beagle named, Willow, sent me an urgent message this morning via flash cards that she held up to the dining room window. Fearful news, it was, as she, on her last outing of last night, spotted a snake in the grove of trees where we chickens sometimes range. “I would have had it, Happy” she explained, “but Mom pulled me off.” The last card read, “Be careful! Love, Willow.” I immediately notified Bo, as he authored the recent, Backyard Chicken Protection Act of 2013. He is going to personally investigate the location where the snake was spotted, along with a team of highly trained S.W.A.T. hens (Snake Weapons and Tactics). Waffles, Betty, and Hattie are three of those hens. I watched them gear up this morning with rope, slingshots, grapple hooks, flashlights and a flour sack. Their goal is always to capture and release whenever possible. Most likely, the snake got washed out in yesterday’s storm, but better to be safe than sorry. Sawyer packed them a lunch of watermelon and grubs, as this could be an arduous task. What the snake doesn’t know, and what Willow proved, is that we chickens have eyes everywhere! We’re watching you, slither boy!
