September 17, 2013 – I shouldn’t have done it, but I couldn’t help myself. When the mailman stopped at our house today to deliver a package to Mom, I jumped into his truck. I don’t know what came over me! I was ranging nearby on a wilted dandelion green when I saw the piles of sorted mail through the open door and I dove in. The next thing I know, I’m watching Sawyer out the back window of the truck, chasing us down the street waving her wings frantically in the air. She thought I had been taken against my will, poor thing. It was a foolish, impulsive move on my part, and yet thrilling at the same time. The smell of yet-to-be delivered correspondence was intoxicating! Think of the miles over which those envelopes had traveled. Return labels boasted names like Niagara Falls, Dallas, Texas, and London, England. Envelopes showcased stamps with flags, bumblebees and flowers, and antique automobiles. I even saw a letter that originated in Chicken, Alaska! I could have stowed away on that mail truck all day, but Sawyer’s screams jostled my concentration and my better judgment. I hopped back out when the mailman stopped at our neighbor’s house. My feet had barely hit the ground when I was knocked over by a frantic, and much relieved best friend. Sawyer gave the mailman the stink eye before pulling me away for the short walk back to our yard. I should have told her that it was all my doing, but I couldn’t stand the thought of her being upset with me. I’ll save the true story for when we’re two old hens reminiscing about life in the chicken yard.
