September 26, 2013 – Today, I watched a reddish-orange leaf fall from the maple tree next to our coop. At first, it was hesitant to go, dangling for a few minutes by a single fiber on its stem. But then, a small gust of wind came up beneath it, twisting and releasing the leaf into the stream of a chilly breeze. I was still watching it flutter and float when Sawyer came to tell me that Mom was in the side yard passing out raisins. I ran from my spot. My heart bounced when I heard her voice call my name. “I heard that you’ve been worried about me,” Mom said sweetly when I caught up to her. I nodded. Then, I saw the swelled fingers on her left hand. Should she be passing out raisins from a hand puffy with poison? I kept the thought to myself and accepted her tasty treat. “It’s okay, Hap,” she said as if reading my mind. “The raisins are safe.” I felt a bit ashamed for even questioning it, but then I set the feeling free, just like the leaf. I spent the next ten minutes catching Mom up on everything she had missed over the past two days, paying careful attention not to bring up the beverage business. That is a talk for another time. She laughed when I told her that we have our eyes peeled for Ivy, the cat with the poison darts. Then, quite unexpectedly, she swooped down, lifted me into her arms and gave me the biggest hug. I’m sure it’s because she missed me terribly; a fine coincidence since I missed her equally as well.
