October 11, 2013 – A bunch of us went for a walk today. The sun is back, and we’re taking advantage. We strolled over to the shed, then up to the giant rock, through the grove and around to the front steps before knocking on the door for Mom. She didn’t answer, so we stood on each other’s shoulders to peek into the house window. Tim doesn’t weigh all that much, so he was on the top of our chicken ladder. He didn’t see diddly squat! I could hear Mom laughing, so I knew she was in there. I was about to change places with Tim when Betty saw a shadow on the ground that she thought was a predator and shrieked, “HAWK!!!!” A minute later and Wilma’s hot and bitter worm breath was getting all cozy with my left ear. Ick! This is what happens when 10 chickens drop and roll under the same shrub. It turns out that there was no bird of prey in the vicinity, just the outline of the patio umbrella. It is the start of hawk season, so I can understand Betty being jumpy. We dusted ourselves off and went back to peering into the living room window. I could still hear Mom’s voice nearby. I nearly dropped an egg when she came up behind us and whispered, “What are you all looking at?” She had been outside in the garage the entire time. Sure… it’s funny now, but I think we aged three years!
