October 16, 2013 – What a thrilling time I had in the middle of the night working with Bo and Wilma at the still. Having, “The BodyDogs”, patrol the perimeter of the site for predators and nasty cats made all the difference. We were able to get a good batch through before dawn without a single issue. We now have some mighty fine hooch ready to deliver to high-paying customers. The three of us make an admirable team, but the entire flock pitched in. Sawyer was up early with a batch of buttered toast for the dogs. Tim took over the crowing duties this morning for Bo. We were bone weary, but accomplished. I was aiming to get a little shuteye before tackling the rest of the day, when Mom texted me. Her laptop went down and she needed my expert technical advice. I couldn’t tell her that I was drop-dead tired from cooking up illegal alcohol in the woods behind her house. So, I dragged my drooping behind, up to her office window and rapped on the glass. I thought she was going to let me in the house, but she brought the computer outside and set it on the patio table. “Are you feeling alright today?” she asked when she saw my puffed and bleary eyes. “Never better!” I fibbed before entering a series of keystrokes that returned Mom’s home page to its healthier self. She clapped her hands and hugged me over the fine display of software restoration skills. I must have snored during the encounter, because she carried me back to the coop and slipped me an apple slice before suggesting that I take it easy for the rest of the day. “I’m a chicken, Mom,” I smiled. “Taking it easy is what we do.” I don’t think she believed me, because she chuckled and winked before she left. Maybe she suspects that we’re up to something. She does always seem to find out in the end. But right now, I’m just too pooped to ponder.
