October 19, 2013 – Mom’s been out in the van all day! She finally got back home a few minutes ago. I’m crossing my toes that she didn’t use up all the gas. Everything is still on track for tonight’s moonshine delivery. We’re waiting until after midnight when everyone in the house is asleep, before filling the well behind the back seats with 15 plastic jugs of 180-proof, pure white New England whiskey. While the family was out for the day, we chickens moved the illicit gallons of hooch from the still site in the woods, to a camouflaged safe-spot just outside our run. We used the red wagon that we saved from our neighbor’s recycling bin to transport the load. We fashioned a leather and lambswool harness capable of fitting 14 chickens, (12 hens, one burly rooster and one rooster of bantam size, to be exact). Even with Bo shouldering most of the weight and Tim shouting out encouragement as our coxswain, the lot of us nearly dropped by the time our haul was secured under the red maple that shades Coop #3. With any luck, the hardest part of the night is behind us. To fortify ourselves for the adventure ahead, we took a two-hour nap and then, sat down to a steaming bowl of delicious spaghetti. Hopefully, we have enough stamina to see this transaction through to the end. This is the night that turns a bunch of ambitious backyard entrepreneurs into legitimate business moguls. Godspeed, we chickens of Cluck, Cluck, Doo! Godspeed.
