November 4, 2013 – Wilma woke me up out of a sound sleep at 2:oo this morning.
“Did you leave the coffee pot on when you went to bed?!” She accused.
“I’m a tea drinker,” I responded blearily.
“Well, SOMEBODY left it on. Can’t you smell it?!”
I lifted my beak in the air so my nostrils could get a whiff of what the old crone was going on about. There it was. The pungent, bitter, eye-burning odor of… skunk spray. Glory, it was strong! I was fully awake after that. One must have passed by fairly close to our coop. I bet it got scared when the flood light turned on and that’s when it shot out a blast of putrid skunk stink. I’m glad that we have an air purifier. I cranked that puppy to the maximum setting and went back to sleep. I dozed off and on until morning, when the smell of Wilma’s coffee pot mixed with the lingering odor of the nighttime skunk. I couldn’t take it. I grabbed Sawyer by the wing and the two of us walked into town for a hot cup of tea and a raspberry scone.
