December 24, 2013 – We’re all heading over to Coop # 1 for dinner, but before we do, Sawyer and I stopped by the house to slip Mom’s Christmas present under the tree. I think she’s going to love the portrait of her flock. We are a smashing group, for sure! We had to quickly hide it behind our mirror when Mom brought us warm oatmeal and raisins this morning or she would have seen it before it was wrapped. That was a close call!
Mom and the family have already left to visit their human relatives, so that gave us time to look around and visit with Sadie and Willow, our beagles, Chowdah, our basset hound, and Danno, Sky and Sprite, our parrotlet and parakeets. I am so full of Christmas spirit that I even nodded to the cat, Sugar Plum. Who knows what she’s full of? She rolled her eyes at me and slinked under Mom’s bed.
Before Sawyer and I left to join the gathering at the Orpingtons’, Sadie grabbed my wing and brought me over to the fireplace. I was blown away. Mom had hung a stocking for every beating heart that calls this piece of earth, home. I spotted the one with the name, “Happy” outlined in silver glitter. It is the most beautiful sock I have ever seen!
“Just wait until tomorrow!” Willow said excitedly. “Mom has a surprise for all of you! It’s going to be GREAT!!”
Suddenly, I couldn’t feel my feet anymore and yet, my body was electrified with breathless anticipation. I thought I was going to faint! Sawyer noticed my wobbling and steadied me before I toppled into the tree, which was also quite lovely. I could hear sweet voices singing in the distance. We moved to the window and saw the other chickens standing in choral formation, lifting cheerful carols into the winter air. A tear trickled from my eye. I love my family so much.
Sawyer and I quickly hugged our four-legged brother and sisters and rejoined our flock in Christmas celebration. I wonder how far our voices will reach on this most beautiful night.
