December 29, 2013 – We received the best news! Violet hasn’t been feeling well due to a respiratory ailment. She was truly under the weather when Mom pulled her from the Orpington coop a few weeks ago and set her up in a hospital bay in the cellar. Mom kept her warm and added electrolytes to her water (which seems to me, like something you’d need a colander helmet for), and gave her some other kinds of get well treatments. We were really worried about her. Before the snow came, the other hens and I used to wander into the garage and sit with Violet, but we haven’t been able to lately. Thank goodness we can still chat with her via Skype. Mom told us this morning that Violet is doing much better, which is a huge relief to us and especially to Charlotte and Emaline, her best friends in Coop #1. To prove that she is almost ready to return to her flock, Violet laid an egg this afternoon! It’s a beauty! We watched the entire thing unfold on closed circuit TV. It brought a tear to our eyes. We were whooping and cheering, rooting Violet on from our spot in the henhouse. If the weather clears, we’re going to see her tomorrow. Charlotte knitted Violet a brilliant scarf made with periwinkle blue yarn. It will look smashing on her! To top off the day, Mom treated Violet to a pedicure, trimming her nails to go with her new, healthier look. She also cleaned our coops and put in fresh shavings just before the rain started to fall. Tonight, we’re all comfy and cozy and happy that Violet is going to be fine. Now, we can exhale.
