January 8, 2014 – Today, I found the zip line kit that I ordered last year through the mail. I got so busy with our beverage business that I never had time to install it. It took a bit of muscle and some help from the other hens, but we did it! There is now a cable-rope express running from a tall pine tree in the grove, down the slope of the side yard to a landing platform in our chicken run. I wanted Sawyer to be the first to give it a go, but she insisted that I take the inaugural plunge. I strapped a rock climbing helmet to my head, (it’s too cold for the colander…), slipped on a pair of ski goggles, scaled the giant boulder where I practice yoga moves, climbed into the seat harness, and let the pullets shove me into the air. I took off like a peppermint patty in a slingshot. It was incredible! The funniest moment came when I passed Mom’s office window. She was in her chair talking to someone on the phone when I blew by yelling “YEEE HAWWWW!!!” at the top of my lungs. I don’t know what surprised her more – me flying by her window on a zip line, or the rest of the flock cheering and running after me on the snow path. We had to stop after one run because it got too windy, but tomorrow, all the hens are going to give it a try. I’m laughing already just thinking about it!
