January 9, 2014 – As planned, the other ladies and I quenched our need for speed this afternoon and buckled in for an exhilarating thrill ride on the zip line. Waffles and Betty and Peaches each took their turn with eager enthusiasm. The older hens were hesitant. They wanted to give it a go, but a fear of falling to their deaths gave them pause. Charlotte finally stepped up to the big rock and inhaled a gulp of air. I was proud of her until she started screaming like a masked assassin was chasing her. Sawyer and I hadn’t even buckled her into the harness! That hen has a pair of lungs on her! She finally took off, picking up speed as she went. Somewhere along the cable ride, she flipped over backwards and her fluffy parts spread across her face. At least that muffled the squawks. Mom was just returning to her desk when Charlotte blew past the window like a feathery fan dancer. This time, she came tearing out of the house in a terror. What a sight to see Mom chasing after Charlotte who was so balled up in her tail feathers that she couldn’t enjoy the scenery. Needless to say, Mom shut us down and the zip line is officially out of commission. I’m hoping it’s temporary. I figure in the spring I can spin its usefulness by offering to zoom over the yard spreading grass seed. It’s a reasonable compromise. As for Charlotte, she has a severe case of the spins. Peaches and Addie have her sitting on the old turntable playing her in reverse to counteract the dizzies. I think it’s just going to make her sing backwards.
