January 21, 2014 – It is downright frigid! I set out early this morning for a brisk walk around the yard before today’s snowstorm settles in. It was a brisk walk alright. My feet were so cold, that I ran back to the henhouse. I ran so fast that my lungs began to freeze and burn. I could feel myself turning into a hensicle! I was so stiff, that by the time I made it to the coop door, Waffles and Betty had to toss a rope under my wings and pull me in. I plopped onto the floor like a flounder being hauled from the sea, but without all that wiggling. I wasn’t wiggling anything! Wilma and Saywer each took a hairdryer to me trying to melt the ice that encased my feathers. Hattie suggested they stick me under the drying hood at Violet’s hair salon, but that would mean going back outside in order to get to the garage. Lovely thought, but no thank you! Tim gathered every blanket we own and then he and the girls wrapped me into a quilted cocoon under the sun lamp. A bowl of vegetable soup and a pot of Red Rose tea began to slowly calm my shivers and thaw my insides. I was going to put on my mukluks and snorkel jacket to finish my walk, but I think this has been enough excitement for one day. I’ll better prepare myself tomorrow. I want to study ice bugs and I also want to stick orange flags around the chicken yard so Mom doesn’t shovel over us after the blizzard.
