February 9, 2014 – Sawyer and I got in a bit of trouble with Mom today. Not the, “You’re grounded!” type of pickle I’ve found myself in before. This was more of a simple talking to and a “please don’t do that again” scenario. Here’s what’s behind the hullaballoo.
We have two nest boxes in our coop – plenty, one might reason, for the number of hens who share this henhouse. The issue seems to stem from the fact that I like to sleep in a box rather than roost next to the others, and that I like to use the second nest for storage. I can see how this might ruffle a few feathers, but I didn’t design the building… Mom did!
In the summer, it’s not a problem. The days are longer and I’m usually out ranging when someone needs to lay an egg. As long as she keeps my space clean, I’m open to sharing. In the winter, I tend to linger inside, sometimes napping or writing in my journal within the warm and comfortable setting of my nest box. The younger girls get impatient and have taken to yapping at me in an effort to move things along. Sawyer, being my best friend, started standing guard over both nest boxes while I work, so that I might do so in peace and quiet. For being a gentle soul, she makes an impressive bodyguard, doling out pecks to the head and neck on more than one occasion. It’s not her fault. Do we really need to hear for the hundredth time where I can stick my piccolo?
When Mom came to get eggs, she saw me reading a magazine in the first box and Sawyer standing guard over our goods in the second. We were just about to switch places. Three freshly laid eggs were neatly piled in the far corner of the coop where the younger girls had laid them an hour or so before. Where’s the problem? They laid them inside didn’t they? Well, now Mom is insisting that Sawyer and I give up the second box and find a new place for storage. I have to stop being inconsiderate and Sawyer has to stop pecking the girls in the head. Mom added a third nest box today at the other end of the henhouse, but she said we still have to find a better place to stow our things. We never had this problem when we were in the old coop. I think it’s time we put an addition on this place. In fact, as soon as I get back in my box, I’m going to start drawing up the plans.
