February 16, 2014 – I was helping Mom out by shoveling off the steps to our coop, when Trudy, Mrs. Turner’s goat, came over the rise on a pair of cross-country skis.
“Beautiful day out, isn’t it Happy?” she exclaimed taking in a deep breath of refreshing winter air.
She was right. It was a stunner. Clean, white snow draped over the landscape in every direction. Evergreens still cradled the clumps of fresh powder that had settled in the nooks of branches and limbs the night before. Groups of Icicles dripped in the warmth of the sun casting rays of sparkling jewels before my eyes.
Well, enough of that. “Hey, Gertrude… how’d you like to walk into town for a jelly donut?”
You never have to ask a goat twice. She pulled up to the henhouse while I grabbed my mittens and a potholder hat. I hopped on top of her from the threshold of our door and we swooshed down the hill toward the center of town. A beautiful day, indeed.
