February 21, 2014 – Today, the vegetable seed packets I ordered online came for me in the mail. I’m thinking of adding a vertical planter to the side wall of our run this summer for convenient snacking. While I was fanning through the envelopes, Maisy happened by.
“Are those your seeds for this year, Happy?” she asked enthusiastically. I confirmed that indeed they were. Then surprisingly, she pulled from behind her back, a plastic sandwich bag heavy with an assortment of pips and kernels.
“These are the seeds that I’m going to plant!”
They didn’t look like any I’ve used before.
“What are you aiming to grow?” I asked the young hen in curiosity.
“Chickens!” Maisy blurted with pride.
“Chickens?” I echoed. “How on earth, are you going to grow chickens?!”
“Easy!” she replied waving the plastic bag in front of me. “I’m going to use bird seed.”
Oh boy. Somewhere along the academic line, we failed this amusing botanist.
