February 28, 2014 – A house on our road is getting a makeover! It’s been empty for a year, but today, work crews showed up, full of enthusiastic plans to transform the neglected structure into the beautiful home it once was. I could hear from my roost, the buzzing, whirring, and banging sounds of power tools, saws and hammers working in lively unison. I couldn’t take it any longer! I had to help! I grabbed the yellow hard hat that hangs on a peg in the garage and took a walk over to the construction site. It was so noisy inside the house, that no one heard me come in. I sneezed from the sawdust that thickly hung in the air and stepped over large sheets of plastic that covered floors and doorways in every room. Workers framing a new wall, blasted nails from an air-pressured gun as I happened by, nearly scaring me half to death. I thought we were being attacked by snipers and dropped to my belly, where I was immediately stepped on by a woman wearing a tool belt and swinging an orange bucket filled with… I don’t actually know what it was filled with. I couldn’t lift my head high enough to see. I stood and dusted myself off, still intent on finding the person in charge and offering my services. I hadn’t gone too far, when a man with a ladder came rushing toward me in the hallway and I had to jump into the bathroom to get out of his way. Perhaps this was not my best idea.
The safest exit was the open window over the bathtub. I made it up and out with an easy hop and landed in a snow-covered pile of leaves in the backyard. Fresh air!
I was a little disappointed that I didn’t get to help or actually speak to anyone, but some days that’s how life goes. The experience gave me a great idea. I went home and built a wooden bird house out of pine scraps left over from last summer’s projects. I’m going to paint it yellow – (because yellow is a happy color) and give it to the new neighbors when they move in.
Oh – I just had an unsettling thought. I hope the lady at the library doesn’t buy this house. She is deathly afraid of talking chickens.
