March 12, 2014 – A young girl scout knocked on the door of our coop this afternoon to ask if we might be interested in buying a box of cookies from her. She and her troop were raising money for summer camp. I’ve never seen a scout up close before. Her name was Ava, and she was tremendously personable. I was very complimentary of her uniform and badges, as they made her look noble. She described to me some of the adventures the troop leaders organize for the girls, and then started to laugh thinking about the time her best friend Lindsay got glue in her braid and her mother had to cut it off. What a hoot! Her troop sounds very much like our flock.
I asked Ava if chickens were eligible to become girl scouts. She didn’t see why not, which was most encouraging to hear, until she added that I might be better suited to a club known as 4-H. I wonder if the “H” stands for “Happy”. That would make sense… “4 Happy”. I will check them out and hope that they too, have clever outfits with badges.
We ended up purchasing a box of mint cookies and a box of coconut. I will enjoy them later tonight with the other hens over a nice cup of tea. I waved goodbye to Ava as she met up with her mother at the end of our driveway. She promised to visit again and bring Lindsay with her. I promised to hide the glue.
