March 14, 2014 – Trash Day!! Peaches, Sawyer and I took our customary stroll around the neighborhood to peruse recycling bins before the guys in the big truck came for the weekly collection. Peaches picked up a discarded copy of National Geographic, but got flustered over a picture of a naked gazelle and tossed the magazine back in the bin like her wings were on fire. An empty pizza box at the next house enticed her to the point of sniffing every corner for traces of leftover mealworms. I reminded her that mealworms are not generally a topping enjoyed by humans, which caused her to sigh and move on to the next bucket. Sawyer nabbed an empty wine bottle. I wasn’t sure what for, until she told me that she saw on a craft show how to turn them into romantic dinner candles. I asked her with whom was she intending to be “romantical”, and she mumbled something about Laredo, one of the draft horses at Mrs. Turner’s farm. Not judging…!
We were almost back to the house when I spotted something glistening in a blue bucket overflowing with plastic water bottles. I tossed the containers out of my way to get a better look. Holy moly! I hit the mother lode! Someone had thrown away the side mirror to a car! Imagine! I hauled that peach out in seconds to check it over. No broken glass, not even a scratch in the layer of silver-pearl paint that covered the now purloined piece. It was a beauty! I couldn’t stop looking at myself. A little sticker on the bottom said that objects in the mirror are closer than they appear. That explains why I didn’t see Wilma behind me until she pecked me in the head. Nothing like a poke in the eye to call it quits on a fruitful day of trash-bucket treasure hunting. The good news is I can look at my eye all night if I want to. I’m thinking of installing the mirror in my nest box. Seeing two of me should thoroughly wig out Wilma, and that… is what you call a successful day!
