March 19, 2014 – Wilma was cheating at pinochle today. She had the Ace of Hearts tucked under her tail feathers. We wouldn’t have known that she was double-dealing if the cinnamon nachos Sawyer served hadn’t caused her to sneeze. The cheating was bad enough, but I was sitting across from her when the convulsive expulsion occurred. Good Lord Almighty! Cheese Whiz exploded all over my face – as this was the last thing Wilma ingested before the nachos showed up.
When evidence of deceit became clear, Betty called her on it.
“Hey! A card just shot out of your bottom! That seems a little fishy to me, Wilma!”
I thought it was rather brave of Betty to question the elder hen, since Wilma doesn’t take kindly to insinuations. To Wilma’s credit, no pecking ensued, though she did regard Betty with a threatening glare.
“Are you implying that I am a cheat!?” she drawled.
Betty was about to confirm Wilma’s assertion, when Peaches walked by, picked the card up off the ground and cheerfully exclaimed, “So that’s where you went!” Then she turned and addressed us. “I’ve been searching for this card for days!”
I watched Peaches tuck the card under her wing and continue on her way to Coop #1. Betty apologized to Wilma and left the game to walk the snow path with Waffles. I washed up and went for a walk in an effort to clear the image of Wilma’s cheesy sneeze from my mind’s eye. I bumped into Peaches who was drawing in a sketch pad with one of her Christmas pencils.
“I thought you’d be playing solitaire,” I chuckled.
“You covered for her, didn’t you?” I asked lightheartedly.
She smiled again.
Sometimes we don’t give Peaches enough credit. She is one smart chicken.
