March 26, 2014 – The snow portion of the Nor’easter forecasted for our area never materialized. The storm moved far enough out to sea that our chicken yard was spared winter’s last hurrah. The wind was another matter altogether. Gusts were strong enough to snap tree branches and send whatever wasn’t frozen under snowbanks and ice patches, into whirling dervishes of mayhem. This afternoon, Mom stopped by to toss into our run a delicious batch of scratch. She was forced to grab the back wall of the coop in order to stop the wind from blowing the ground out from under her. I ran over to her to say hello and thank her for the midday treat, when a couple of pine shavings flew up in a tizzy and clung to my eyelids like magnets! I kept walking around in a circle wondering why I wasn’t getting anywhere. Poor Tim! A squall lifted him off the timber roost and blew him straight out the run door. Mom never even noticed! She was busy trying to untangled Betty and Waffles who had collided in air and now shared the same legs. It was all too much. I ran into the coop to grab my colander helmet. I blew the Chicken Citizen’s Patrol whistle and commanded through my bullhorn that everyone take cover. “RETREAT TO THE SAFETY OF THE HENHOUSE!!” It took some maneuvering and Wilma using my back as a railing before we were all safe and sound. The wind continued to howl maniacally outside our window. I played my piccolo to mask the sound and help settle the nerves of my flustered feathered family. Mom still gave us the treat… that is, once she retrieved Tim. She found him doing an outstanding impersonation of a weathervane on the roof of Coop #2.
