May 7, 2014 – What a glorious day! The girls and I were out early snagging all sorts of bugs and worms from the side yard. Every so often, one of us would lift our head into the air and breathe in the sweet smell of spring. Ahhh, it’s a wonderful life being a chicken!
Mom stepped out for a visit shortly before noontime. She didn’t stay long. Evidently by the swatting and carrying on she did, the black flies are back in season and she’s an advertising, redheaded fountain of sweet meat. She was swollen in welts after two minutes! We immediately put the pullets on the job. They became her Bug Protection Detail (BPD) and snapped up any winged creature that came within a 10 foot radius of Mom. She was very appreciative and gave us strawberries.
It’s funny how much we love to eat flies. I think they smell like blueberries. It’s even funnier how much flies love to eat Mom. To them, she must smell like spaghetti!
