May 15, 2014 – The official invitation to Dumpling Longfeather’s gallery showing came in the mail today. It’s going to be on Saturday, the 31st. This means that we will have to leave the day before in order to get there on time and return on Sunday. But Dumpling included a handwritten note requesting that we stay a few days longer so she can show us around Nova Scotia. She’s suggesting 5 days. I’m going to have to talk this over with Mom. Private jet or not, it’s a long time to be away. I wish Mom could come with us, since she LOVES steamers and Dumpling promised us a clambake, but with Holly and Violet recuperating and the ducklings and the chicks taking up her time, I can’t see how she can break away right now. Tomorrow, everyone is piling into the truck. We’re going to the post office to fill out our passport applications and have our photos taken. I’m so excited! A passport and a license! Could this year get any better?! I’m going to need a wallet for my satchel.
I spent the rest of the day playing with a purple rubber band that I found in the side yard. I have no idea how it got there. I stepped on one end with my foot and pulled the other end taut with my beak. It was a stretcher, all right! I thought – Hey, this is great exercise for building up my worm tugging muscles! And then wouldn’t you know it, I opened my beak and the rubber band snapped a bite out of my toes like a crocodile!
I started hopping around, cradling the injured foot in my mouth until I heard Peaches yell, “Hey everyone! Happy invented a new dance!”
After that, she cranked up the speakers to her iPod and the entire flock started dancing the “One Foot Side-Yard Shuffle” to a rocking country tune. I have to admit it made me laugh, which in turn made my toes hurt less.
It’s a wonderful chicken life I lead. I should write a book about it.
