July 8, 2014 – My dear friend Violet, who has fought so hard over the winter and spring to regain her health, laid an egg today. Not just any egg… a beautiful, perfectly shaped, blemish-free piece of art. It is her first egg since she fell ill all those months ago, and a clear sign that she is a fighter and an inspiration! We are so proud of her that we held a party in her honor. It was a scorcher today, so we had lunch at the patio table under the big umbrella that Mom and the family use. We easily fit two chickens into every chair so there was plenty of room. The ducks stopped by and tickled our feet under the table. This made Violet giggle with glee. Mom came out during a break from work and poured us clinkity ice-filled glasses of mint infused water. She even floated blueberries on top! After she went back inside the house, Bo “enhanced” the beverage with a splash of moonshine. It was a special occasion after all.
After we feasted on cold appetizers, chilled spaghetti salad and tomatoes and blueberry yogurt for dessert, we presented Violet with a gift – a new artist easel and fresh paints. She loved it! She commented that she would very much like to paint a portrait of our flock, so we immediately scrunched together into a lovely pose. Tim jumped into Betty’s lap, a duck popped its head in between me and Sawyer, and Charlotte and Addie reached into their purses and pulled out their pearls which they immediately snapped around their necks. Violet laughed and said, “I didn’t mean right now… it’s too bloody hot!” and popped a shrimp in her mouth. We had a good laugh over that one before Emaline suggested that we bring out the slip-n-slide. It was a perfect day for barreling down the side yard on a watery stretch of plastic. Goggles not included.
I am so glad that you’re back to full health, Violet. You’re a champ in my book!
