July 12, 2014 – I wanted to conduct investigative research on Charlotte’s secret admirer but my iPad was out of battery power and I couldn’t find my charger. I had an idea though. Peaches and Sawyer had wandered over to Mrs. Turner’s farm this morning to spend the day with Rosemary and Gertrude. So I sent Peaches a text asking her if she’d mind if I used her laptop. It was my old one anyway. I gave it to her when I bought the tablet. She was most gracious and replied, “Absolutely! Help yourself. Going on a wagon ride. See you later tonight.”
I thanked her and told her to have fun. Then I took the short walk to Coop #1 to retrieve the computer. It was in the last nest box and I spotted it right away. I took it to a shady spot under the porch and powered up. When I reached the login screen, I typed in my old security code out of habit. It didn’t work.
Of course not! I said hitting my head with my wing. I need Peaches’ password.
I sent her a quick follow-up text and waited for a reply. Nothing. Either she didn’t want to tell me, or she had dropped her phone off the back of the wagon.
Hmmm. Maybe I can crack the code on my own!
I typed in a few words that I thought Peaches might use: stick, beer, pullet-camp, but none of these entries were correct. After three attempts a message popped up asking me if I had forgotten my password. No! I remember my password, I just don’t know the password Peaches uses!
Evidently, that was too lengthy a reply. The screen kicked over to one designed to quiz people in the same predicament as me. If I answered three correct questions, I’d be able to reset the current password and get beyond the security wall. I’d have to think like Peaches, but it was worth a shot.
Question #1 – What is the name of your best friend? (Easy!)
Question #2 – What is your favorite after dinner activity ? (I had to think a minute, but I think I got it…)
Answer: Watching fireflies
Question #3 – Name a talent that your friends and family would be surprised to hear you have. (Really?! I deliberated with myself for five minutes before entering the answer I thought Peaches might have used…)
Answer: Balance a steaming cup of cocoa on the tip of my beak.
I took a deep breath and hit the enter button. A little circle appeared on the screen swirling in place for several seconds while my answers were being reviewed. Finally, the system sprang to life with congratulatory music and the page changed to Peaches’ desktop. I was in! I had cracked the code! WHOO HOO!
I had to laugh when I saw which picture Peaches set as her wallpaper. It was the photo she and Sawyer and I took in a photo booth during our trip to Nova Scotia. Sawyer and I were wearing the berets we picked up in Paris and Peaches was holding the handcuffs the constable gave her as a keepsake. Good times, good friends. I was overcome with a rush of nostalgia and the need to be with my best friends. I closed the laptop and put it back in the nest box of Coop #1. Then I snapped on my colander helmet, jumped on the Vespa, and headed over to Mrs. Turner’s farm. I caught up with everyone just as the wagon ride was starting. With encouragement from Peaches and Sawyer, I ran after it until I could reach their outstretched wings. They pulled me into the hay-covered bed and laughed as I tried to right myself.
Yup… I thought pulling a piece of straw out of my mouth, this was a much better idea for today. I can be a gumshoe tomorrow.
