July 24, 2014 – I found a basketball in the garage and rolled it out next to where our truck was parked. What an exciting discovery! There are enough chickens in our flock to make up two basketball teams. If we learn how to play, this could be a wonderful summertime activity for me and my feathered family.
We gathered in a circle at the bottom of the driveway to talk it over.
“What do you do with the basketball,” Waffles asked.
The others nodded their heads, anxious to know the answer.
“Well… I assume a basket is involved,” I replied.
“There’s an apple basket next to the shed,” said Tim. “I’ll go and get it!”
He came back a few minutes later wearing it over his body so only his legs were visible.
“I forgot how big an apple basket is,” he laughed and placed the basket on the ground in the middle of the group.
“What’s next?” Addie inquired.
“I think we’re supposed to throw the ball to one another,” Peaches offered. “Happy, why don’t you start since you’re the one who found it.”
It took every bit of strength I had to lift the large orange ball. I leaned back and heaved the orb as hard as I could into the air. It hit Charlotte dead center between the eyes and she dropped to the ground unconscious.
“This is a horrible game!” Violet said softly shaking her head. “You didn’t say anything about an elimination round!”
“Wait, she’s still breathing!” Sawyer proclaimed bending over Charlotte’s lifeless frame. Charlotte’s eyes fluttered open a second later.
“YES!” I cheered. “Lottie has not been eliminated!!”
We all cheered and helped our elder hen to her feet.
“I’m not sure I’m up for basketball,” she said to me as Emaline rushed in with an ice bag.
We placed Charlotte in the apple basket and carried her back to Coop #1.
“It was a good thought, Hap,” Tim said as we left Charlotte’s coop where she was resting comfortably.
“I guess we should leave the human sports to humans,” I mused.
“Though…” said Tim placing his wing on my shoulder for emphasis, “I did see some lawn darts in the shed. How hard could that game be?”
I’m headed now to get our goggles and helmets.
