September 1, 2014 – It’s another steamy day out there, journal readers. It’s hard to imagine that in a few short weeks the leaves will be turning from green to the orange and yellow and reds of autumn. But for now, I will endure this last hurrah of summer heat with appreciation for all it has provided, for I do so love fireflies and toasted marshmallows, Vespa rides and blueberry frozen yogurt.
Eh, who am I kidding. I hate to sweat. It is sticky and hot and I don’t feel as fresh as I typically do. To remedy this, I’ve pulled a lounge chair up to the duck pool and I am sipping a frozen pina colada in the shade. Today, I’ve traded in my colander helmet for a straw hat and sunglasses. Chickens don’t usually wear straw hats simply because it’s too tempting to eat them. But I just finished up a chilled pasta salad with mealworms and tomatoes, so I’m fairly confident I can keep the hat on without fear of consumption. The quack boys are going to help me launch my inflatable raft as soon as I finish writing this. I’m going to snooze on the water and pretend I’m on a cruise ship sailing through the Inside Passage of Alaska. (I saw a television show about Alaska. I’d like to go there someday and bring home a chunk of ice.) It should be a relaxing afternoon so long as the boys don’t pull any whirlpool antics. I’ll toss my cookies if the current starts spinning too fast. Then again, I can always use my hat as a distraction. Ducks love straw.
Tomorrow, it’s back to work. The Happy Chicken Brewing Company is going to be buzzing with activity. We have a dozen new customers and deliveries to make this week. We have more autumn flavors to produce like our Fresh Grub Porter, which is super with mosquito burgers, and our Back Porch Oktoberfest which has a bagel-like malty scent and crisp hopping. Then there’s the moonshine! I think we’ll have a good season coming up. I can feel it!
Alright. It’s time to get in the duck pool. Wish me luck. (I should have grabbed my goggles.)
