September 9, 2014 – After yesterday’s adventure to pick up the Madame Curie stamp, Tim came to me with a question.
“I’m considering picking up a hobby,” he said hopping from the thinking log to the forked branch in our run. “Everyone seems to have one but me. Sawyer collects coins, the ladies of Coop #1 like to knit, Violet paints, Emaline cross stitches, you have a stamp collection… Even Bo has the leisurely pursuit of corn cob pipes. I’m wondering what might be a suitable pastime for a bantam rooster like me?”
“Well, what do you find interesting?” I asked.
“Baseball, beer, fashion… I love neckties. I don’t know why chickens don’t wear them all the time. They’re the perfect accessory: napkin, tourniquet, headband, bucket hoister. Not to mention that in one, I look like a rooster of refined distinction. I know that I’m the number two guy around here after Bo, but maybe if I dressed for success, the flock would take me more seriously.”
My heard swelled. Tim is a wonderful rooster. If I squeezed him as hard as I love him, he would surely explode.
“I think collecting neckties is a perfect hobby for you,” I encouraged. “In fact, why don’t you come with Sawyer and me tomorrow on our delivery run. We’ll make a swing by J.J. Polks Haberdashery.”
“The fancy clothing shop with the giant bowler hat as it’s sign? It’s all the way over by the seacoast!”
“Yes, and we’re headed in that direction anyway. No reason we can’t buy you a couple of neckties and enjoy a lobster roll all in the same trip.”
I don’t think Tim is going to sleep a wink tonight. I filled Sawyer in on the plan and she too, is thrilled. First, because she loves Tim as much as I do, and second, because she hasn’t had a bucket of steamed clams all summer. This is going to be a great day!
