November 1, 2014 – Peaches walked around the coops after the skies grew dark wearing a tricorn hat and swinging a night watchman’s lantern back and forth above her head.
“HEAR YE, HEAR YE! ALL HENS WITHIN EARSHOT. TURN BACK YE CLOCKS BY 1 HOUR! ”
“Peaches,” I called, sticking my head out the window of Coop #3, “We’re not supposed to do that until 2:00 A.M. It’s only 4 in the afternoon!”
“But it’s dark,” she countered, “and Mom gave me the job of reminding everyone to fall back an hour once it gets dark.”
“It’s dark because it’s raining,” I reasoned.
“It’s still dark,” she said a bit more forcefully than I’m used to hearing from her. “It’s a very important job to do and I want to finish so I can use my extra hour for something special.”
“Like catching up on this week’s episode of “As the Hen Lays. I can’t wait to see what happened to Lady Sassy, the Speckled Sussex of Spencer. You know she’s not really royalty. She’s an imposter as I live and breathe!”
Peaches’ plan sounded great on a windy, rainy day. Once she was satisfied that all of us had heeded her direction and turned the clocks back sixty minutes, she invited everyone over to Coop #1 to watch the show with her. The weather might have been howling outside, but so were we when Lady Sassy was stripped of her jewels. What a soap opera! Spending the extra hour together turned out to be the best part of my day.
