December 8, 2014 – It is December 8th. I am sitting in my nest box wrapped in a patchwork quilt with a potholder hat on my head. The temperature outside the coop is below freezing and a bitter wind is blowing. In a minute, I’m going to plug in the electric fireplace to take the chill off and put together a scrumptious fondue. Winter for chickens is all about eating. It’s how we keep out internal engines burning hot. It’s a good thing I don’t wear pants, or I’d need to let out the waistband. Yes. A piping hot pot of cinnamon tea and a fork full of bread and worms dipped in gooey cheese, is exactly what I need. I’d say I’m managing through winter just fine.
